Truthiness – the quality by which a person claims to know something intuitively, instinctively, or “from the gut” without regard to evidence, logic, intellectual examination or actual facts.
Truthiness is a satirical term coined by Stephen Colbert during the first episode (October 17, 2005) of his satirical tv show The Colbert Report, as the subject of a segment called “The WØRD”, which makes it eminently qualified for inclusion here.
There is some contention that Colbert invented the word as it also appears in the Oxford English Dictionary as a derivative of “truthy” and is defined as “a variation of straightforward truthfulness”.
Regardless of invention or reinvention, these definitions are absolutely spectacular and the word is becoming more and more recognisable in daily life. The primary culprits for this (and for the misuse of words in general) are, as always, the politicians, religion and the news media.
Entertain yourself over the next few days by looking out for instances of truthiness.
