THE ALEX CAINE SERIES
BOUND, OBSIDIAN and ABDUCTION
“Alan Baxter delivers a heady mix of magic, monsters and bloody fights to the death. Nobody does kick-ass brutality like Baxter.” – Greig Beck, bestselling author of Gorgon.
“Bound, the first in a quick-release series of three novels… is gritty and filled with battle. Alex Caine is like Lee Child’s Jack Reacher with a spell book. A genuine page-turner from a major new writer.” – The West Australian newspaper.
THE BALANCE DUOLOGY
REALMSHIFT and MAGESIGN
“RealmShift is phenomenal. If it’s not already on your bookshelf it should be.” – Midwest Book Review.
“Alan Baxter takes the reader right to the edge and then pushes us over. And I thank him for it.” – Bitten By Books
My first collection of short fiction.
Limited Edition Hardback, Hardback, Trade Paperback, and Ebook out in November 2016.
Published by Ticonderoga Publications.
“Alan Baxter is an accomplished storyteller who ably evokes magic and menace. Whether it’s stories of ghost-liquor and soul-draining blues, night club magicians, sinister western pastoral landscapes, or a suburban suicide–Crow Shine has a mean bite.”
– Laird Barron, author of Swift to Chase.
Jason Wilkes’s life takes a turn for the worse when his wife fails to come home from her book club. Jason calls Kate’s ‘book buddy’, Dave, who assures him she left hours ago. Contacting the police, Jason finds them equal parts sympathetic and suspicious. He tells them almost everything, except that he’s been hearing Kate’s voice, calling as if from far away. He certainly doesn’t mention that he’s seeing shadows that reach for him. With the police getting nowhere fast, Jason takes matters into his own hands, even as nightmare images and Kate’s distant cries continue to haunt his waking moments and his dreams, and the strange, grasping shadows persist. Jason begins to unravel the mystery, but he’s at odds with the police, he’s being lied to by Kate’s book club friends, and his chances of finding Kate slip ever further away. It seems that everything is going to go as wrong as it possibly can.
More details to come – due for publication in May 2017.
Ghost is possibly the best bounty hunter in the universe and he always gets the job done. At least, that’s the reputation that he rides on. When the DAP employ him to track down and capture a rogue Magicker who’s running across the galaxy killing anyone who gets in his way, Ghost realises that this is a job that could cost him his reputation. It’s also a job that could cost him his sanity.
“I really liked how the futuristic setting took a back seat to the almost crime-noir story and character. It was like Micky Spillaine meets Bladerunner. I could actually go back and read some old hard-boiled detective fiction after this, but I’d have a feeling that this would still be more fun!” – E. Patrick Dorris (Smashwords review)
THE DARKEST SHADE OF GREY (ebook)
David Johanssen’s drinking problem goes beyond the usual need for self-medication. He sees things he shouldn’t be able to see, things no one could handle seeing. And he has no one but himself to blame.
When a chance encounter offers the possibility of answers, he follows the bloody trail in spite of his own fears. It could be the big story he needs to keep his job. It could be the meaning of life. Or it could be the end of his world.
“The story has a strong tidal flow that drags the reader through to its imaginative climax… an enjoyable and engaging pulp-inspired read that fulfills the promise of its evocative cover and its effective title, with some ideas that linger in the mind long after the lights go out.” – Robert Hood, for Thirteen O’Clock
A fiction writer’s resource for creating realistic, convincing fight scenes.
As an author and martial arts instructor, I’ve written a short, ~12,000 word, ebook describing all the things a writer needs to consider when writing fight scenes. My experience from decades as a career martial artist makes this book a valuable resource for writers who want to understand what fighting is all about – what it really feels like and what does and doesn’t work – and how to factor those things into their writing to make their fight scenes visceral, realistic page turners. I won’t tell you how to write, but I will tell you what makes a great fight scene.
“The best way for a writer to learn what’s really involved in brawling, short of going down the pub and starting something.” – Pete Kempshall, author

“Wood and Baxter have delivered a stunning tale that reminds of an early Stephen King’s talent for the macabre with a pinch of Graham Masterton’s flair for witchcraft and terror.” – Greig Beck, bestselling author of Beneath the Dark Ice and Black Mountain
